Joe Biden – Signed Giant Package:

NEW YORK (Dagbladet): In a solemn ceremony at the White House, Biden signed a law of 1200 billion dollars. This is equivalent to 10.4 trillion Norwegian kroner, according to APF News.

Biden hopes that the giant package will help make him more popular again. He has fallen in opinion polls in recent months while inflation has risen and the pandemic continues to grip society.

– My message to the American people is this: America is moving again, and your life will be changed for the better, Biden said when he signed the law.

Cross-party

The infrastructure package was adopted with the support of Democrats and 19 Republican senators, including Republican leader Mitch McConnell. Cross-party agreement like this has been extremely unusual in American politics in recent years.

The decision means that the United States will pour huge sums into roads, bridges, trains, ports, electric charging stations, replacement of old water pipes and development of broadband networks. The package is expected to create many jobs across the country.

Sober

Historians, economists and engineers the Associated Press has interviewed believe Biden’s package is a step in the right direction. But at the same time, they believe that the sum is nowhere near enough to repair decades where US authorities have not spent enough money on maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure.

– We must be sober here about the gap between investments in infrastructure. This is not enough to solve our infrastructure problems across the country, says David Van Slyke, dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University to the news agency.

Biden also tried without success to link the infrastructure package to an even larger package of 1.85 trillion dollars (about 15.9 trillion kroner) to social support schemes, health and climate measures. The Democrats have not yet managed to agree on this among themselves.
