US President Joe Biden has promised Ukraine advanced long-range missiles, according to US media. The so-called ATACMS missiles, with a range of more than 300 kilometers, are expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.
Biden is said to have promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the missiles during Zelensky’s visit to the US this week. Ukraine would receive “a small number” of the missiles, the quote said NBC News in The Wall Street Journal anonymous US government officials. Ukraine and the US have not commented on the news.
It was previously announced that Ukraine can count on a new American aid package, but not on the missiles for the time being. Although its delivery in the future was not ruled out.
Discussions are still expected to take place about exactly how many missiles the US will deliver and which variant. There are several versions of the ATACMS missiles, the abbreviation of which stands for Army Tactical Missile System.
Some are equipped with a single bomb, others with a cluster bomb, which splinters into several small explosives after the raid. In July, the US announced that it would also supply cluster munitions to Ukraine.
The US previously feared escalation due to delivery
Zelensky had been lobbying the US for the ATACMS missiles for months. President Biden long opposed its delivery. There were fears that they would end up on Russian territory and draw the US further into the conflict.
In recent months, Biden seemed to be increasingly adjusting his position. Kyiv hopes to use the missiles to hit Russian supply routes and command posts behind the front line.
