Joe Biden or the new version of “America First”

“America is back, diplomacy is back. The message that Joe Biden wanted to send to Europeans, during his tour on the sidelines of the G7, was clear. And he repeated it over and over. With two implications: the new administration wants to put its relations with its allies back at the heart of its diplomacy, and it intends to rely on a system of values abandoned by Donald Trump.

In the eyes of some European observers, this promise is enough to make the US president the leader the Western world has been waiting for. Make no mistake, however: there is nothing romantic about this vision. It takes up a classic reading grid in American diplomacy, the export of its model coupled with the defense of national interests, by adding a component that the Democrats had lost sight of, the defense of the middle classes. In this – and also in its immediate consequence: the attempt to build an anti-Beijing front – the Biden Doctrine is more of a synthesis of traditional Democratic diplomacy and that of the Trump years.
