Joe Biden met the wife and daughter of Alexei Navalny, who died last week, in San Francisco on Thursday. The US President has expressed his condolences to Yulia and Dasha Navalnaya.
“Alexeis’ legacy of courage will live on in Yulia and Dasha, and in the countless people fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia,” Biden wrote on X.
The president also said that Russia will be imposed new sanctions on Friday due to Navalny’s death. Biden and other Western leaders hold Vladimir Putin’s regime responsible for the death of the opposition leader.
The sanctions will apply to more than five hundred people and organizations. The measure, which is being taken in cooperation with other countries, will target the Russian military industry and companies in other countries that provide Russia with equipment.
Navalny’s mother Lyudmila Navalnaya reported on Thursday that she had finally seen his body after days of waiting. According to Navalnaya, Russian authorities want her son to be buried quietly.
The Putin critic’s team disputes authorities’ claims that he died of natural causes.
