Joe Biden leads the US Democratic primary in Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri

He was predicted to have strong results in both southern states – and it looks like US presidential candidate Joe Biden has the opposition Democratic primaries in the states Mississippi and Missouri actually won. Several US broadcasters reported that the former Vice President had, according to forecasts, prevailed against the left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders.

Shortly thereafter, Fox News and MSNBC unanimously reported that Biden was also in Michigan is in front. Most delegate votes (125) are given there on this little Super Tuesday, so the state is considered to be the most important on this election Tuesday.

“Tonight we are one step further in restoring decency, dignity and honor to the White House,” said Biden during a brief appearance in Philadelphia. It looks like “another good night”. Biden said some had recently declared his election campaign dead. “We are very much alive now.”

For Sanders, the prognoses mean a severe setback. He had focused his election campaign very much on Michigan in the past few days, where he won the 2016 primaries. The state in the Midwest is “very, very important” for the race, Sanders admitted at the weekend, but at the same time emphasized that he would not give up in the event of a defeat in Michigan.

Elections will take place in six states on Tuesday. There are more to come Idaho, North Dakota as Washington on the northwest coast. A very close race is currently emerging in the latter. A total of 352 of the 3979 delegates who will nominate President Donald Trump’s challenger at a party congress in July will be determined. 1991 votes are required for a nomination.

On the evening of the election, Biden also turned to Sanders and his supporters: “We have a common goal. Together we will defeat Donald Trump,” he said. “We will bring this nation together.” He wanted to thank Sanders and his followers for their “tireless energy and passion”.

Missouri and Mississippi are southern states with a relatively large percentage of black voters, many of whom support Biden – he was vice president under the first black US president, Barack Obama, who was in office from 2009 to 2017. That earned him a certain leap of faith in the African American electorate.

In other southern states, too, Biden has achieved some clear victories in the previous primaries. A week and a half ago, his election campaign had almost been declared dead. The turnaround brought spectacular success in the area code in the southern state of South Carolina at the end of last month.

Primary elections were also held for the Republicans this Tuesday. There were no surprises. Incumbent Trump clearly prevailed in Mississippi, Missouri, Michigan and Idaho. There were no Republican contenders in Washington State and North Dakota.
