US President Joe Biden acknowledges that the Armenians were subjected to genocide in the Ottoman Empire about 100 years ago.
– We confirm the story. We do not do this to apportion blame, but to ensure that what happened is never repeated, Biden said in a statement on Saturday.

Around 1.5 million Armenians are estimated to have been killed during the years 1915-1920. April 24 is the official day of remembrance for the genocide.
“We remember all those who lost their lives in the Armenian genocide during the Ottoman Empire, and we commit ourselves again to preventing such an abuse from happening again,” says Biden.
The US president spoke on Friday with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the phone about the expected announcement.
Turkey denies that the Ottoman Empire was guilty of genocide, and the decision is expected to provoke strong reactions in Turkey.
