“Joe Biden Declines to Apologize for Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki”

US President Joe Biden will not apologize for the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was announced today, May 17, by Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to the American leader.

“The President will not make a statement at the Peace Memorial Park (in Hiroshima)”, he said, answering a question from journalists whether Biden, on behalf of the United States, intends to apologize for the atomic bombs dropped on Japanese cities.

Japan is chairing the G7 this year. The G7 Leaders’ Summit will be held May 19-21.

According to Sullivan, Biden, along with other leaders of the G7, will take part in the laying of flowers and other events.

“From his point of view, this is not a bilateral event. A group of G7 leaders will come to pay tribute to both history and Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kisidewho was born in Hiroshima, Biden’s aide said during the briefing.

On August 6, 1945, the United States atomic bombed the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and three days later, Nagasaki. As a result, more than 210 thousand people died or went missing, about 200 thousand were exposed to radioactive irradiation.

The atomic bombings in the cities of Japan are the only examples in the history of mankind of the combat use of nuclear weapons.
