US President Joe Biden has put 28 new Chinese companies on a blacklist of companies in which Americans cannot invest.
The list was created by former President Donald Trump, who marked himself with a very hard line towards China.
Biden has continued much of its predecessor’s China policy, and the number of companies on the blacklist was increased to 59 on Thursday. The new companies reportedly have links to the Chinese military.
The ban on investing in them takes effect on August 2, according to Wall Street Journal.
The sanctions affect companies related to the production of technology that can be used for monitoring. Such technology facilitates repression and human rights abuses, according to the White House.
The Chinese authorities have previously reacted strongly to the blacklist, saying it is politically motivated.
That the United States should maintain a hard line towards China is one of the few things that has been agreed in the US Congress. Both Democratic and Republican senators signed a letter earlier this week asking Biden to expand the blacklist.
