US President Joe Biden receives German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House on July 15. It will be a farewell visit of the German long-time leader to the United States, as Merkel will leave politics after the Bundestag elections scheduled for this autumn.

Her relationship with former US President Donald Trump was complicated, so Merkel did not hide her satisfaction that Biden had taken her place. But Merkel and Biden’s meeting at the White House will not be just a friendly chat, as the United States and Germany have differing views on a number of important issues, such as China and Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

This is German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 19th official visit to the United States, but Joe Biden is the fourth US President she will meet during her 16-year reign.

How important is this meeting in the show Afternoon evaluated by a political scientist, doctor of history Ojārs Skudra and the president of the association “European Movement in Latvia” Andris Gobins.
