“Jodenzeug” may remain attached to the German church | Abroad

The relief “Jodenzeug” from the 13th century on the facade of the church is an insult in itself. Among other things, it shows Jews hanging from the udders of a sow. But according to the court it is nowadays part of a memorial with explanatory text on a plaque and therefore has no offensive character anymore.

According to the complainant, the image is an insult to the Jewish community and a daily symbol of anti-Semitism in the church and in society. He has announced that he will appeal.

Maarten Luther

Wittenberg is a center of Protestantism where the theologian Martin Luther formulated his 95 propositions against trade in indulgences and initiated the reformation. Luther (1483-1546) was also known as an anti-Semite, because he turned against the Jews in particular at the end of his life. They refused to convert to Christianity, to the great frustration of the church father.
