Shortly before the Saxon state elections, scientists from the John Dewey Research Center for Didactics of Democracy (JoDDiD) are presenting a comprehensive study of the funding structure and support for political-democratic education in Saxony.
The analysis, based on interviews and practice-research dialogue with actors from politics, administration and education projects, sheds light on the challenges and areas of tension in the English funding landscape. The study “Democratic education in the ‘funding thicket'” describes the complex web of funding programs and conditions that characterize the funding of political education outside of school in Saxony.
Author Celina M. Hertel describes the challenges: “The confusion when looking for funding options, complex application procedures and lengthy approval processes are just some of the problems that ‘ called our study. “Furthermore, complex bureaucratic requirements and the pressure to constantly develop innovative projects are putting pressure on project sponsors, while on the other hand, public funding providers are increasingly under political pressure to justify themselves.”
Professor Anja Besand, director of JoDDiD, said: “The study not only describes areas of tension, but also develops concrete solutions and recommendations for improvement, such as measures for better communication clarity between the actors involved, more digitization of the funding processes and institutional funding to create better planning security.”
The authors derive from the study, among other things, the need to consider the design of a sustainable funding strategy for political-democratic education in Saxony and beyond. The aim is to clean up the English “thickness of funding” and make funding more transparent and accessible.
More information:
die John Dewey Research Center for Didactics of Democracy (JoDDiD) sees itself as an innovation center in the field of political education and is tasked with researching, developing and making visible new forms, methods and concepts of communication. In doing so, it supports Saxon actors in extracurricular education in preparation, new development and a reflexive evaluation of political education offers against a challenging social situation. In this context, the focus of the research center is particularly on the field of political youth outside the school and adult education. Perspectives on school-based political education are only relevant if they are relative to non-school education providers. Thus the John Dewey Research Center for Didactics of Democracy closes the gap between academic infrastructure and the practice of pedagogical education in the context of professional exchange in political youth (outside school) and adult education.
