Jockey Pat Cosgrave banned for 28 days after throwing away victory on long odds-on favourite Concorde

In the world of horse racing, jockeys have to make split-second decisions that can mean the difference between winning and losing. However, some decisions can have consequences beyond just the race itself. This was the case for Pat Cosgrave, who recently faced a 28-day ban after his actions on a 1-6 favourite cost him a certain victory. Cosgrave’s decision to dramatically throw away the win has not only impacted his career but has also raised questions about the responsibility that comes with being a top-level jockey. In this article, we’ll explore what led to Cosgrave’s ban and what it means for the world of horse racing.

Jockey Pat Cosgrave has been handed a 28-day ban after he eased up too soon on favourite Concorde, losing by a nose to My Roxanne in Thursday night’s mile handicap at Chelmsford. The 1-6 hotpot looked certain to win having cruised into the lead in the final furlong, but Cosgrave began to ease his mount, underestimating the proximity of Brian Ellison’s My Roxanne. Speaking on Racing TV, Cosgrave said: “I’ve just made a judgement of error, a mistake, and the eventual winner has just caught me unaware.” Winning trainer Ellison admitted that he had not expected to win with My Roxanne. Cosgrave was suspended for 28 days for “failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on a horse that would have finished first”.

The moment was described as “embarrassing” by Cosgrave, who apologised to the owner and trainer of Concorde. The BHA stewards’ report said: “Pat Cosgrave, the rider of Concorde, placed second, beaten a nose, had failed to ride out approaching the finish. After being interviewed and showed recordings of the incident, Cosgrave was suspended for 28 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on a horse that would have finished first.” With £12,000 matched at 1.01 on Concorde on the Betfair Exchange, My Roxanne saw a return of 8-1.

In conclusion, Pat Cosgrave’s actions on the racetrack have raised eyebrows and resulted in a 28-day ban. As a jockey, his responsibility is to provide a fair and honest performance for both the horse owners and punters. In this particular instance, his disregard for the horse’s welfare and his reckless behavior ultimately cost him the victory. It is our hope that Cosgrave takes this as a learning opportunity and works to improve his sportsmanship moving forward. We look forward to seeing him back on the track delivering stellar performances while upholding the spirit of the sport.
