In the future, commercial air taxis from Joby Aviation will take passengers from New York’s JFK Airport to downtown Manhattan without emissions in seven minutes. The electric air taxi can charge in around five minutes while passengers get off and on, said CEO JoeBen Bevirt on Sunday during a demonstration flight in New York. Passengers should book the flight like they would with a ride-sharing app. Commercial operations are scheduled to start in 2025.
Landing site at the southern tip of Manhattan, space for four passengers
The company is currently in the third of five certification phases with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The small aircraft, equipped with six pivoting propellers and a small wing, can take off and land vertically like a helicopter. The takeoff and landing location in the city center will be the heliport at the southern tip of Manhattan. The aircraft, which can reach speeds of more than 300 kilometers per hour, can accommodate a pilot and four passengers.
