Ten occupations boosted employment in the eight months of January-August, creating 299,148 new jobs, showing an increase of 6.13% compared to the same period last year.
According to ERGANI data, net employment flows (recruitment minus layoffs) were particularly increased (positive) in the months of February, March, April, May and June and negative in the months of January, July and August.
It is noteworthy that 54.11% of the new jobs are full time and 45.8% are positions part time and shift work.
The 10 professions that shot up the employment index are:
- Public administration and defence; compulsory social security with 12,361 recruitments
- Education with 10,579 recruitments
- Building and outdoor service activities with 4,683 recruitments
- Creative activities, arts and entertainment with 5,609 jobs
- Office administrative activities and secretarial support 955
- Food service activities with 91,909 recruitments
- Accommodations with 30,938 recruitments
- Food industry with 14,268 jobs
- Retail trade with 22,345 employees
- And storage and transport support activities with 3,761 jobs
Which occupations present a negative balance?
On the contrary, the balance is negative, i.e. more layoffs in occupations related to: human health activities, social welfare activities, accommodation provision, sports activities and fun and entertainment activities.
The Ministry of Labor records the increase in employment as the highest performance recorded since the existence of the relevant data (employment flows) and highlights the fact that unemployment remains consistently below 10%.
Balance of hiring – firing
In particular, during the month of July, the balance of hiring and layoffs is negative by 34,979 jobs. According to the data on wage employment flows, recruitment announcements amounted to 299,010, while departures amounted to 333,989. Of the 333,989 total departures, 117,266 came from voluntary departures and 216,723 from terminations of open-ended contracts or expiry of fixed-term contracts.
From the comparison of the data of the two months, July 2024 and July 2023, there is a reduced performance of 26,685 fewer jobs for July 2024 (negative balance -34,979 jobs) compared to a negative balance (-8,294) in July 2023. Cumulatively for the period January – July 2024, recruitment announcements amounted to 2,013,199 jobs and departures reached 1,708,970, of which 1,037,566 were the result of termination of open-ended contracts or expiration of fixed-term contracts and 671,404 voluntary departures. Thus, the balance of wage employment flows in the first seven months of the year 2024 is positive and is formed at 304,229 new jobs, constituting the highest performance of the first seven months of the year from 2001 to date.
The data for August
For August, a decrease in salaried employment in the private sector is recorded, by -5,081 jobs. Recruitment announcements amounted to 214,678, while departures amounted to 219,759, of which 92,690 came from voluntary departures and 127,069 from terminations of open-ended contracts or expiry of fixed-term contracts. From the comparison of the data of the two months, August 2024 and August 2023, there is a positive performance of 10,745 more jobs for August 2024 (negative balance -5,081 jobs) compared to a negative balance (-15,826) in August 2023.
Below 10% unemployment rate
The Minister of Labor in her statement speaks of the highest performance ever recorded, noting that for the first time in the last 15 years the unemployment rate has fallen below 10%, while the data of PS Erganis confirm this important performance, recording an all-time record in employment.
