Washington (awp/afp) – The number of job offers and the number of resignations fell in April in the United States, while remaining at an exceptionally high level, according to data from the Bureau of Statistics (BLS) published on Wednesday .
A total of 11.4 million job offers were recorded at the end of April, compared to 11.9 million the previous month. And the number of workers leaving their jobs fell very slightly to 4.4 million.
Despite these decreases, the labor market remains particularly tense.
For a year, employees have taken advantage of job opportunities, while offers have far outnumbered requests, currently nearly two offers for one applicant.
The largest declines in job openings were seen in health care and social assistance (-266,000), retail trade (-162,000) and accommodation and food services (-113,000) , detailed the BLS which depends on the Ministry of Labor.
The largest increases were in transportation, warehousing and utilities (+97,000); and in the manufacturing sector of non-durable goods (+67,000) and durable goods (+53,000).
Layoffs, meanwhile, fell to their lowest level (1.2 million), as companies sought to keep their employees.
