Job market Schiphol: ‘Can everyone who is here so place’

“I think that we can help all 1500 interested parties who have registered for this job market to find work,” says Marco de Jong

He is the co-owner of WerkCentrale Nederland (WCN), a recruitment and selection and staffing company.

‘Really need people’

Employers for whom De Jong is looking have about 500 vacancies, he says. But he’s not the only one fishing for the interest of job seekers. Sodexo has nearly 200 vacancies in catering and technology.

The five security companies at Schiphol are looking for ‘at least’ 500 people, says Francien David, Director of the Aviation Community Schiphol.

And the other companies that are there all have a lot of vacancies. “At least 10,000 jobs have been lost during corona, we desperately need people now.” She says she doesn’t know how many there are.

Sign up bonuses

Companies try to convince candidates with coffee and tasty cookies, but also with registration bonuses, which can amount to 750 euros gross.

There are not only many jobs in security, but also in catering and logistics, among other things. The latter includes many different jobs: from baggage assistants to employees who, for example, accompany passengers who are in a wheelchair.

Shortages: HR to Production

Candidates leave their details so that they can be called back on Monday, says Rowan Bruyn of GateGourmet, a company that ensures that meals and drinks are on time before planes depart.

Bruyn himself works at an employment agency that works for GateGourmet. Because of the staff shortage, the company’s HR employees have also been deployed to provide food and drinks for airlines.

First conversations

At WCN, Natasha van Eijndthoven has already briefly discussed her options. She trained at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.

In Namibia she had her own consultancy, but in the Netherlands it is difficult to get a job because you are expected to speak Dutch, says Van Eijndthoven. That is why she now wants to try to find a job in logistics.

‘Want to work in logistics again’

Sjaak de Bruine hopes to find a job as a logistics manager again on the job market. He has worked in the logistics sector for a long time. For example, he streamlined logistics processes. He was most recently in the US, but that company went bankrupt.

Amanuel Kidane also wants to get back to work. He worked for KLM for 29 years, most recently in the freight planning department. He would like to continue in the sector for a while, he says while looking at vacancies.

From pharmacist to catering

Peggy Harfouche has just entered her details at KLM Catering. She trained as a pharmacist, but her diploma from Lebanon is not recognized here, she says.

Fortunately, she also likes catering. For example, she sometimes provides catering for family or friends, up to 15 people. “I like to work, I’m flexible, I also want to work at night and I speak Dutch, French and English fluently.”
