Joaquín Furriel: From Scandals to Spiritual Awakening – Turning 49

Joaquín Furriel earned a place among the most prestigious actors in our country: the native of Lomas de Zamora turns 49 with many work commitments on the horizon and several roles in series that were all the rage on platforms, such as El Reino. However, his career as an interpreter was full of pitfalls and, despite his concerns during adolescence that led him to be imprisoned four times, he came to analyze the possibility of being a priest.

The film and television figure was born on August 26, 1974 and, at just 20 years old, he began to gain recognition among his peers after touring with a cast of students. In 1996, he appeared in eight episodes of the youth telenovela Montaña rusa, otra vuelta, but his explosion came after he played Joaquín López Echagüe in Verano del 98 (2000).

In this context, Furriel recognized that he was little applied in terms of studies and that, when he was young, he used to get into jokes that were also linked to the socioeconomic situation of the country.

“I didn’t have a very light period. Neoliberalism, the Conurbano, Duhalde, the raids… The paco began, which I did not consume because I saw what it provoked in my friends. That was a very violent and aggressive decade,” said the winner of the Cóndor de Plata award.

In turn, he said that his parents had to go look for him at the police station on several occasions due to problems with the Police: “It was because they did not have ID. I never stole stealing, I come from a hard-working middle-class family with values. My provocation was more with the State, a very punk thing too. The impunity of politics, the caudillos in the province of Buenos Aires, was an extraordinary level of power and corruption…”.

On the other hand, the protagonist of El jardín de bronce -which has just premiered its third season- affirmed that he suffered beatings in those arrests: “The truth is that I had a bad time because they shit on you. It was like bullying, they were totally provocative. For us it was the way to continue fighting against a force that was not educated and prepared for the cultural change that Argentina needed”.

The interpreter also explained that he grew up in a Catholic family and that he was an altar boy in his youth, but that reading changed his perception of reality. “At the age of 15 I read The Antichrist, by Nietzsche, and I began to understand the place of religions. I began to internalize myself more and more, and I moved away from dogma and cultural construction. It’s hard to say ‘I don’t believe in anything,’ but I don’t have an organized faith from that place,” he explained.

The final season of the series starring Furriel premiered in July.

Furriel, who received criticism from evangelical sectors like the rest of the actors who were part of the strip that became one of the most watched on Netflix, confessed that he was about to become a priest: “I could have been a seminarian if at that age I had not encountered the theater and started to ask myself other questions. It seems to me that today I am more skeptical”.

At a special moment in his life, after recording El robo mundial, and in the midst of rumors about an alleged love affair with Guillermina Valdés, the actor will celebrate a new anniversary of his birth with widespread recognition from the public and the press.
