João Chianca Pipeline Accident: Update on Surfer’s Condition and Recovery

João Chianca, number 4 surfer in the world and Brazilian qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics, suffered a serious accident this Sunday, in Pipeline, Hawaii. Chumbinho fell from a wave and was dragged to the beach, where he was rescued unconscious by members of his team. Rushed to the hospital, the Brazilian is doing well and is in a stable condition.

This is the beginning of the swell season in the region and the amount of sand on the bench can make visibility difficult for surfers. According to witnesses at the scene, João had already received several blows to the head before the fall. Chumbinho was rescued unconscious three minutes after the accident and taken to the hospital by friends and his brother, Lucas Chumbo, who helped with the rescue.

Guilherme Tâmega, Brazilian six-time bodyboarding world champion, said that João was trying to get on the wave, but was unable to stabilize himself. According to Tâmega, who is also a lifeguard at Pipeline, the surfer ended up thrown head first into the coral and passed out on impact. Chumbinho was unconscious during the rescue and had cuts to his head, but he regained consciousness before getting into the ambulance.

— The wave was so heavy that he must have pierced and hit the coral head first. We only saw the plank, here from the tower, and when that happens, we run down there. We placed him on the sand, he had a pulse, but was unconscious. He was recovering and was already wanting to get off the stretcher, as he got better. When he was taken to the ambulance, he was already doing very well — said Guilherme, who participated in the athlete’s rescue.
