João Almeida’s Loss at the Tour of Poland: How He Let Matej Mohoric Escape

João Almeida was unable to repeat the success of two years ago and win the Tour of Poland again after letting the Slovenian Matej Mohoric escape at an intermediate point, more than a hundred kilometers from the finish line of the last stage. The Portuguese cyclist had reduced the difference, the day before, to less than a second from the leader (0.74 seconds), but this Friday, on the last day of the race, he threw everything away in a sprint still far from the finish line.

It was right in the first kilometers of the last stage, in the dispute for the midpoint of Wilamowice between the main candidates, with the Slovenian and fleeing the Portuguese and gaining another second of bonus, to then manage that short advantage.

The Portuguese cyclist was, from the outset, forced to try to win the following bonus points, but he was unable to enter the fight with the sprint specialists and never again managed to gain time from the leader who managed the rest of the race to the finish line in Kraków.

The Belgian Tim Merlier, from Soudal-QuickStep, ended up winning the seventh and last stage, with a time of 3:28.44 hours, beating, also in sprint, the Dutchman Arvid de Kleijn and the Colombian Fernando Gaviria.

In the general classification, João Almeida finished second, just over a second from the winner, while Ruben Guerreiro, the other Portuguese in this race, finished in 25th place.

It was at this moment that João Almeida lost the Tour of Poland:
