Joakim Fernulv Opens Up About Childhood Trauma and Guilt in ‘The Secret of the Elite Force’

Joakim Fernulv48, as one of the soldiers we get to follow in the new season of The Secret of the Elite Force on TV4. Along with the other 17 participants he undertakes both the physical and mental tests involved in the programme.

But to participate in it wants a tv show certainly not the only challenge thrown in Joakim’s direction in his life – on the contrary.

When Joakim was seventeen, he and a friend went back around Asia. After a late night with a lot of alcohol, they ended up in the wrong place in the city they were traveling in at the time. The night ended with Joakim and his close friend being jumped on by a gang.

But instead of helping, Joakim ran away and left his friend behind, although Joakim could hear his screams. The friend was stabbed and beaten to death in the street.

In the episode, Joakim brings up the difficult event when he is asked why his self-esteem is so bad.

– I bring with me a package of guilt from childhood and growing up that … You have to work together, he tells the elite soldiers.

– My big debt is that my friend died when we were out on tour. I feel like I left him in the lurch and ran away. I let him down, says Joachim.

Joakim is asked in the program how he handled the debt in the past:

– Self-destructive behavior, periods of addiction. I just punished myself.

The incident reinforced Joakim’s already poor self-esteem.

– Suddenly I had once again proven to myself how unworthy I was. I couldn’t even line up there. That feeling has affected my whole life. It still sticks with me – the feeling that I failed, that I was a coward.

Joakim about life after the secret of the Elite Force and the murder of his friend

Joakim has put a lid on the whole event before and, instead of seeking professional help, he started to self-medicate with various substances to suppress it.

– Partly as it happened, partly also shame on him, said Joakim to Hänt.

Joakim worked for a while as an IT consultant to earn money, but then he felt that it was not for him.

– That’s why I became a firefighter and started working in the rescue service. Maybe it was a subconscious feeling – I just want to help other people as much as I can, says Joakim.

Joakim says that today he wants to take revenge for the whole thing. From being the person who always sought success – to being the person who helps and supports others.

Can you forgive yourself and move on?

– I’m not sure about that, but my participation in the program made me want to open up, and I wanted to say it like it was. Feeling that I am really someone who wants to help and support. It feels really good, that this is who I really am, he says to Hänt.
