Joachim Gérard Fails to Win Opening Match at US Open 2023

Joachim Gérard failed to win his first match of the US Open in New York. The 34-year-old wheelchair tennis player lost an exciting duel against the Argentinian Gustavo Fernandez: 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-4 after 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Gérard is the number 5 in the world, Fernandez the number 3. Our compatriot also lost his first match at the Australian Open and in Wimbledon. Only at Roland Garros there was a second match.

Joachim Gérard still won the first set after a close tiebreak, but Fernandez turned the tables. He will play for a place in the semi-finals against the Dutchman Ruben Spaargaren (ITF-6).

Today Gérard plays in the doubles tournament. The Brussels resident forms a duo with the Dutchman Maikel Scheffers. In the first round they will meet the British Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid, the first seed.

Joachim Gérard has already reached the semi-finals of the US Open twice (in 2015 and 2020) in the singles tournament and was a losing finalist in the doubles in 2013.
