Jo Squillo against Elodie. A bad statement or a deliberate broadside? Within the speech of the singer of ‘We are women’ and among the first explorers of punk in Italy a different vein can be sensed, but the phrase is one of those destined to cause discussion.
“For me the feminism it means freedom – he explained in an interview with Corriere della Sera -. I had experienced machismo, I couldn’t go out in the evening because I was female, but I did. It seems like a century ago but the time is not far off when one could not refuse to have sex with one’s husband.”
And up to this point no attacks. Then, speaking of the Italian record industry, here is the sentence about Elodie: “The Italian music industry favors young people because they can handle them. Fortunately, today’s kids are very determined and have their own labels. Elodie if she weren’t so beautiful she would be less successful, I’m sure. You always have to show, show: this is not required of men. Most music buyers are women and they buy men’s music.”
An affirmation which, in absolute value, could also find a certain explanation in the concept of “if you are a woman and good-looking, in Italy you have to work twice as hard to make it clear that you are also good”. But the problem is that “I’m sure”. As if to say: Elodie owes all of her enormous success certainly to her beauty. Which, frankly, is all to prove. And, indeed, not demonstrable.
Furthermore, what is being discussed is the fact that it was one who made such a statement woman, artist and activist right for civil and women’s rights for many years.
