during one Visiting The New Yorker at the Mattel Design Center, director JJ Abrams revealed some details about the upcoming Hot Wheels movie in a short video. He explained, “We spent a lot of time talking to Mattel about Hot Wheels and couldn’t find anything that lived up to the Hot Wheels title. So we came up with something… something emotional, dark and grim.” Unusual description for a film about toy cars.
The project was recently scripted by Warner Bros. Dalton Leeb and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson, but the idea of a Hot Wheels movie has been in the works for some time. Originally, Fast and Furious director Justin Lin was set to bring Mattel’s popular toy line to the big screen, but that approach was later scrapped. Eventually, JJ Abrams got involved in the ambitious project, which has been described as a “high-gas action film.” Lots of classic Hot Wheels and mind-blowing stunts to look forward to.
“Hot Wheels has inspired the competitive spirit of car enthusiasts for generations,” said Robbie Brenner, Executive Producer, Mattel Films. “Fans of all ages can now look forward to the ride of a lifetime as the incredible talent of JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot has joined us alongside Warner Bros. Pictures to transform Hot Wheels’ iconic IP into an exciting story for the… transform big screen.”
It is still unclear when the cinema release could take place at the earliest. Before 2025, however, one should probably not count on the blockbuster.
