Jitka Molavcová: The Versatile Actress, Singer, and Caregiver

Jitka Molavcová (73) is a truly versatile artist. For more than 50 years at the Semafor Theater, she performed many beautiful roles as an actress, and was also a gifted singer and saxophonist. In private, this amazing woman has been taking care of her paralyzed partner, Alfréd Stejček (81), for several years, and she still can’t stop smiling. It is therefore not surprising that director Olga Sommerová (73) made a documentary about her with the most characteristic title she could give it: Klaunka. It is broadcast by Czech Television.

The general artistic talent of Jitka Molavcová was most succinctly described by music critic Jiří Černý: “Let’s say a crazy manager puts out an ad: I’m looking for a girl, singer and actress, guitarist and banjoist, saxophonist and trumpeter, beautiful and skilled, lyrical and comical, naive and debaucherous, bright as from Broadway, dirty as from the dugout, flexible, bouncy , able to perform at least 25 years in one theater, no more than 34 performances per month. I pay in crowns! – Life gave an even more surprising answer: Jitka Molavcová. And he is not the only one who talks about her in this way in Olga Sommerová’s documentary dedicated to Molavcová.

Jitka Molavcová has been performing in the theater for more than half a century Traffic lights, where she was accepted as a chanson singer, but Jiří Suché did not miss her acting talent and soon created a comedy duo with her. It was thanks to her work on these boards that she discovered her talent for clowning. “To me, a clown is something sacred. After all, even children are clowns from whom I learn. They keep asking, they wonder, they have a pure soul,” explains his approach in the document Klaunka.

Severe life wounds and a rare disease

Although we see the actress almost always with a smile on her face, she too had to deal with the heavy blows of life. In 2017, her life partner, the musician Alfréd Strejček, suddenly contracted the rare disease Guillain-Barré syndrome, which caused him to be completely paralyzed for some time. “Suddenly I found myself in a limp state. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t move. A strange funny thing happened when visitors came to me, mainly my daughters and Jitko, and wanted to talk to me. And I found that I was only opening my mouth without a sound,” Strejček described probably the hardest days of his life in the show Czech Television, 13th room.

He remained paralyzed throughout his body for three quarters of a year. He couldn’t communicate with his family, and he couldn’t even breathe on his own. At one point, his condition was even said to be so serious that doctors called his children to come say goodbye. In the end, however, he got over it, although he continues to bear the consequences, he is confined to a wheelchair and dependent on the help of others.

Molavcová: The relationship became real only after the illness

However, his problems did not end there. He had a chance to prove that he has a strong root once more, when he recently suffered severe covid associated with pneumonia, pulmonary embolism and a stroke. “During covid, I fell into a deep physical and mental slump. It kept bringing me back kinetically.” stated

“Alfréd is a rare person and we trust each other. We are actually very lucky. I love him very very much” Molavcová, who persistently cares for him, does not let her partner down, and adds: “I feel like our relationship has just become a real relationship after an illness that has been going on for five years. In these situations, you get to know the other person best.”

The document Klaunka will introduce CT1 on Saturday, April 22, 2023 in prime time.
