Jiří Strach, who is celebrating his 50th birthday today, was made famous by the fairy tale Angel of the Lord. Both parts had record attendance in cinemas. And now it seems that the plot for the next sequel is ripe. What will it be about?
Jiří Strach played dozens of film roles as a child. We could see him, for example, in the picture Death of beautiful deer (1986), in a popular Czech comedy Let’s sing the song loud (1990) and later appeared in a love war story A piece of heaven (2005). But he was very critical of himself as an actor, so he opted for a different side of the camera. In 1991, he started to study directing in the class of professor Dušan Klein and began to shape his future profession.

He completed his studies at the FAMU in Prague in 1999. While still at school, he managed to shoot the feature film Testimony, which he also used as his graduation film. To date, it has to his credit over thirty film and television pictures. We can name, for example Labyrinth series or current news Docent starring Ivan Trojan.
He is a member of the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) and since 2005 he has been teaching in the audiovisual production studio of the Miroslav Ondříček Film Academy in Písek (FAMO).
The angel of the Lord brought him love
However, Angel of the Lord became literally a fateful film for him. Not only did the fairy tale succeed and bring him fame, but even him she also played the love of her life. During filming in Šumava, he fell in love with the beautiful Magdalena Stupková, who owned the boarding house where the crew was staying.
A wedding like a movie
A spark jumped between them even though Magdalena was married at the time and she ran the boarding house with her husband. But she got along with the director so well that she left her husband.
In 2006, the couple got married after almost two years of relationship. At that time, the wedding took place in Klatovy in the Jesuit church of St. Ignatius, the ceremony, including all church traditions, lasted two hours. Jiří Strach’s friend, the actor Jiří Dvořák, acted as a witness, who famously portrayed the devil Urias in the fairy tale Angel of the Lord. An incredible 18 years have passed this year since the wedding with the gentle blonde Magdalena.

It will hit theaters next year Strach’s new film called Svatá and the main role will be played by none other than the legend of Czech cinematography Jiřina Bohdalová. This is a difficult story and testimony of a woman who went through the gulag. For Bohdalová, it had a very personal connotation, because her father was convicted and imprisoned for six years in Valdice. “She is amazing. To play such a difficult role at the age of ninety-two, hats off to you,” commented on the performance of the actress in a recent interview, the director, who shares an exceptional relationship with Bohdalová. He describes himself as her “third grandson”.
The third part of Angel of the Lord
Of course, most people are interested in whether there will be a sequel to the popular Christmas fairy tale. However, the director is not sure if it would still work and look as funny as before. After all, it is necessary accept the age of the actors and, in fact, your own.
But he still has the idea for the third part in his head, it will be about hope. “He who knows how to forgive, who has the ability to be a true person, even if he does not believe in God, heaven will be opened to him. Even if he did I don’t know what” described Jiří Strach.
Above all, don’t break anything over the knee
According to him, shooting a TV fairy tale for Christmas Eve is the most demanding task of all. On the festive evening, he always watches a new fairy tale on three million critical viewers, who logically compare. And that is indeed a challenge. The first and second parts of Angel of the Lord were separated by 11 years. Therefore, the director thinks that there is no need to break anything over the knee, and lets everything mature naturally.
