“I lost my house in January 2009 because I ended up in heavy weather. I endured for a long time borrowing from parents, family and friends. My son was born in February and then the question came: where do you want maternity care? And there I couldn’t answer that,” Karin says candidly.
Then a social worker came to talk to Karin and there she told about her high debts with the tax authorities. Two days later, her son, then ten days old, was taken from the hospital and taken away by youth services. He is now twelve. Karin has not seen him since. A few days later, two of her other children – from school – were taken away by youth care and not much later her last two children.

Karin was allocated a squat by the municipality, but because the home was considered too unsafe by youth care, she did not get her children back. “They thought I was insane, and I had to do four psychological tests. And it turned out that I’m a ‘normal’ person.” Because of the harrowing story, Eva doesn’t know how to respond: “They still say they won’t return your children? I don’t really know what to say about it…”
There is also a lot of reaction to the terrible story on social media. ‘Yesterday we were crying Jinek. Not even knowing what your kids look like now. Every time you see the people behind the facts of the unprecedented injustice, it becomes harder to comprehend and stomach,” one wrote. Another viewer says: ‘Last night with horror heard the story of that mother at Jinek. What injustice and suffering and what powerlessness and that is one story, there are so many more. So much abuse of power.’
