SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Seventh grade students at Jimtown Junior High know a good book when they see one.
“It’s cool to see the different types that exist,” said Conner Williams, a seventh-grader at Jimtown.
What does reading bring to these children?
“For me, in my opinion, if I’m reading a book, I can imagine what’s going on,” said classmate Theran Harder.
Language arts teacher Brittany Hedman applied for the Martin’s One School at a Time scholarship with one goal in mind; buy more books!
“They can learn the skills they need through these books,” Hedman said.
Hedman wants to buy several copies of different books that they can read together as a class. Martin’s money is a big help.
“Buying sets of these books as a class is very expensive,” Hedman said. “With a teacher’s salary, I can’t afford to buy class books for everyone.”
“An example of one of the books I would choose was ‘The Outsiders.’ They needed to realize that just because this book was written in this period, those things are still relevant today,” Hedman said.
Your students are listening.
“Knowing what is happening. And know what happened back then. And I like that it’s still happening now,” said seventh-grader Paeyton Hughes.
And the best part? Reading skills are improved.
“I’ve gotten better at this and would love to read more,” Hughes said.
