Jimmy storm in Chepauk; India loses lead in in-swingers

Chennai: India collapse in the first session of the last day of the first Test against England. Jimmy Anderson’s in-swingers are trapping India. Reaching the crease on the fifth day with a target of 381, India were 92/4 for the loss of three wickets. Cheteshwar Pujara, Shubhman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane were the other wicket-takers for India today. Virat Kohli and Rishabh are at the crease.

Rohit Sharma, the opener who scored 12 runs, was bowled by Leach on the fourth day.

Anderson is storming!

India started the fifth day at 39/1 with a 420-run target in the second innings. Shubhman Gill (15 *) and Cheteshwar Pujara (12 *) were at the crease. But Pujara, who scored 15 off 38 balls, was handed over to Stokes by Leach. Gill then grabbed Kohli and tried to score. But in the 27th over, Jimmy set a double trap for India. Gill bowled the second ball for 50 runs. Rahane (0) bowled in the fifth ball. Both wickets were in-swing.

England were bowled out for 178 in the second innings with a huge lead of 241 in the first innings. England put India ahead with a total lead of 419 runs. For India, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took six wickets for 61 runs.

Ashwin blows, but!

Ashwin, who started England’s collapse in the second innings, took the last wicket. Ashwin started the innings with Rory Burns (0) off the first ball of the innings. Dominic Sibley (16) and Ben Stokes (7) also succumbed to Ashwin’s turn. At the tail end, Dominic Bess (25), Joffre Archer (5) and James Anderson (0) surrendered.

Joe Root (40 off 32 balls) was England’s top scorer in the second innings as well. Jaspreet Bumra took the crucial wicket of the route. Ishant Sharma’s 300th Test wicket came as India were bowled out for 18 by Daniel Lawrence. Nadeem dismissed Oli Pope (28) and Jose Butler (24). But even in the second innings, England took a confident first-innings lead.

Sundar, the handsome hero of India

Earlier, India were all out for 337 against England’s 578 in the first innings. Archer started the innings by dismissing openers Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill. Rohit (6) and Gill (29) were the top scorers. Cheteshwar Pujara (73 off 143 balls) and Washington Sunder (85 * off 138 balls) and Rishabh (91 off 88 balls) kept India at bay. The decisive factor was Sundar’s batting with the tail end.

Skipper Virat Kohli was dropped for 11 and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane for one. At the tail end, Ashwin scored 31 runs. For England, Bess took four wickets, Anderson, Archer, Leach and two each. But England’s strategy was to start the second innings without following India.

Rooted root

Captain Joe Root’s double century (218 off 377 balls) in the 100th Test helped England reach 578 in the first innings. Dominic Sibley scored 87, Ben Stokes 82, Oli Pope, Dominic Bess 34 and Rory Burns 33. For India, Bumrah and Ashwin took three wickets each while Nadeem and Ishant took two wickets each.
