The prominent former tennis player Jimmy Connors has expressed admiration for the young tennis star, Carlos Alcaraz, although he believes that the Spanish player still has aspects in which he must improve if he wants to stay ahead of his competitors.
Alcaraz has had a disappointing start to the 2024 season, losing in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open before falling in the semi-finals in Buenos Aires. An ankle injury forced him to withdraw from his first round match in Rio, but the Wimbledon champion looks set to return to action at Indian Wells, which begins on March 3, 2024.
Connors would like Alcaraz to make some changes to his game
In the latest episode of his Advantage Connors podcast, the former world No. 1 spoke about the rising stars on the ATP Tour, pointing to Alcaraz as someone who could improve certain aspects of his game.
“Maybe Alcaraz needs to change a little bit and try to figure out something else,” Connors said. “It’s not a big change, just little scratches along the way that maybe he can change to counter his opponents a little bit. He’s going through a period of inactivity, but you can see that he likes the game, he works hard and to stay in the top, it’s going to have to continue like this.
“All these guys are trying to say: Okay, now it could be me. Now it could be my turn. They’re starting to act like this and it’s only going to make things harder for everyone else. Jannik Sinner is coming and Holger Rune is there. A lot of them From these guys they see that Roger Federer is no longer here and that Rafael Nadal could wait for France and play in the Olympic Games. Who knows what will happen, Djokovic is still playing.
“At a young age, Carlos Alcaraz was quite successful. But along with this also come some injuries that we are aware of. I think some players have understood how to play against him or how he plays. What he did so well at the beginning caught them. by surprise. Maybe they have assimilated it a little.
