Former US President Jimmy Carter, 99, who has been receiving palliative care at home since February 2023, hopes to live long enough to be able to vote for Kamala Harris in the November presidential election, according to media reports.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a newspaper in Carter’s home state of Georgia, reported on Saturday comments by the grandson of the historic Democratic leader, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1.

The former president responded this week to a question from his son, Chip Carter, about whether he hoped to be able to celebrate his birthday, the newspaper reported.

“I’m just trying to get it together so I can vote for Kamala Harris,” confirmed Friday as the Democratic candidate for the White House, the former head of state is reported to have replied, according to his grandson.

In recent days, Jimmy Carter “has become more animated and interested in politics and the war in Gaza,” Jason Carter added.

Carter served in the White House from 1977 to 1981 and is the oldest living former U.S. president.
