Jimmy Carter is currently the oldest living one US President. According to US media reports, at the age of 98 and after several illnesses, he has now joined his family to work here probably his last days to spend.

Jimmy Carter and his illness

Jimmy Carter made it public in 2015 that he suffering from liver cancer may be. Melanomas were also discovered in his brain. A year later he announced that he had overcome the disease. Now, however, Carter’s Health has deteriorated in recent months. This was reported by the Washington Post and other US media. He’s using one now wheelchair, his wife needs a walker. Grandson Jason Carter tweeted in February 2023: “I saw both of my grandparents yesterday. They are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love.”

How Jimmy Carter got into politics

After leaving school, Jimmy Carter first went to the army. He served in the US Navy. After World War II he was stationed on the test ship USS Wyoming, the battleship USS Mississippi and the submarine USS Pomfret. After his father James Earl Carter died in 1953, his son Jimmy left the Navy and took over family plantations. On these, among other things, peanuts and cotton were grown. Jimmy Carter began his political career at the municipal level in the community school board from Plains. He served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and ran for the 1966 and 1970 Senate Georgia gubernatorial elections. In 1970 he won this and campaigned for an end to racial segregation and discrimination. In 1976, Jimmy Carter won the Democratic primary for the presidential elections and won against Republican Gerald Ford.

Jimmy Carter war 39th President of the USA, but only for one term. He lost the 1980 presidential election Ronald Reagan. Carter’s reign was overshadowed above all by the kidnapping of diplomats in the US embassy in Tehran in 1979 and the failed liberation operation the following year. During this time, the regime of Ayatollah Khomeini established itself in Iran and the USA lost a lot of power in the Middle East. Relations with Russia were at a low point. This was shown, among other things, by a mutual boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games in Russia and 1984 in Los Angeles.

The reactor accident at Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) also occurred during Jimmy Carter’s tenure as President.

After his time as US President, Jimmy Carter founded the company with his wife in 1982 Carter Center for the Advancement of Democracy, Human Rights and Economic Development in Atlanta.

In 2002 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Carter also repeatedly interfered in US politics. Contrary to custom, he also criticized subsequent presidents – most recently Republican Donald Trump.
