This weekend, Israel’s army spread leaflets over the town of Rafah, which borders Egypt. There, 100,000 Palestinians were urged to go north to Al Mawasi. But not everyone had time to escape when Israel late yesterday said no to the ceasefire proposal.

During the evening there were reports of bomb attacks and tanks rolling into Rafah.

The UN agency Unicef warns that a ground operation means a disaster for civilians, especially children. Two million Palestinians have believed that Rafah was safe and there are no safe places to flee to.

Even before that, the situation in Gaza was described as “apocalyptic” by the UN. Mass starvation prevails in the northern part of the strip of land. More than 34,000 Palestinians have died so far in the war. Nearly 70 percent of the dead are said to be women and children.

The Cape against Muslims

When the war in Gaza was brought up in SVT’s party leader debate on Sunday, only the red-green parties called for a ceasefire.

Jimmie Åkesson instead placed the blame for the humanitarian disaster on the victims. He thought the whole debate was misconceived. It should only be about Israel’s right to defend itself, he believes, and not about tens of thousands of deaths, starvation and a severely traumatized people.

One should not be surprised that Jimmie Åkesson does not shy away from any means whatsoever to direct the cape at Arabs and Muslims.

People all over the world are protesting against the outrageous abuses that are happening to innocent Palestinians in Gaza. But according to SD’s worldview, it is the same as supporting terrorist-branded Hamas.

Far-right government

Åkesson lumps everyone who is critical of Israel’s warfare with Islamists and anti-Semites. It is an utterly grotesque argument.

The current Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, is the most right-wing extremist in the country’s history.

The government’s ambition is to increase the number of settlements on occupied land and in practice make a Palestinian state impossible. A system has been created with different rights for Palestinians and Israelis, and some ministers have openly racist rhetoric.

The policy program of the Netanuahu government also includes letters such as supports discrimination against LGBTQ people and women on religious grounds. The education system and cultural policy has changed in a nationalist and religious orientation.

Banning Al Jazeera

It has also proposed reforms that would weaken legal certainty and limit the power of Israel’s Supreme Courtl. Reforms that before the war provoked massive protests in Israel.

In the weekend Israel also banned the Qatari-owned television channel Al Jazeera which is one of the few newsrooms that was able to broadcast on the ground from wartime Gaza.

Critical voices are silenced, minorities are oppressed and people are treated differently depending on their ethnic background.

No wonder that Jimmie Åkesson is riding out to the defense of the current Israeli government.
