Jill Roord will be missing next week at the Orange Women’s first training camp towards the World Cup next summer in Australia and New Zealand. The midfielder is still recovering from an injury.
It is not clear what kind of injury the 25-year-old Roord has. On Saturday she played another 35 minutes for her club VfL Wolfsburg in the league match against SC Freiburg (0-4).
The absence of Roord is a line through the bill for national coach Andries Jonker, who wants to lay the foundations for the World Cup during the training internship in Malta. He also cannot dispose of Vivianne Miedema. The star player of the Netherlands suffered a serious knee injury in December and will miss the World Cup.
Tiny Hoekstra is part of Jonker’s 26-strong selection. The 26-year-old Ajax player has been called up for the Orange squad for the first time. The striker scored twelve goals this season and provided six assists in the Women’s Eredivisie.
The Netherlands will leave for Malta on Monday and will stay on the island for ten days. The Orange squad will play two friendly matches against Austria (17 and 21 February). The number nineteen in the world ranking reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship last year, but did not qualify for the World Cup.
For the Netherlands, the global tournament on the other side of the world starts on July 23. Portugal, Cameroon or Thailand is then the opponent. Those three countries will compete for a World Cup ticket at the end of this month. World champions United States (July 27) and Vietnam (August 1) are the other opponents of the losing World Cup finalist four years ago.
