Pilots Eject from Jet During Michigan Air Show
A plane crashed at the Thunder Over Michigan air show on Sunday, causing a temporary halt to the event. The crash occurred during the air show’s 25th anniversary celebration.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, two occupants of the MiG-23 fighter jet parachuted from the aircraft south of Willow Run Airport and landed in Belleville Lake. They were later taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. The Wayne County Airport Authority reported that the plane crashed into the parking lot of an apartment building in Belleville, damaging unoccupied vehicles.
Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured in the incident. Van Buren Township supervisor Kevin McNamara confirmed that the pilot and backseater successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash. Although they did not appear to have sustained any significant injuries, they were transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Videos captured by witnesses showed smoke and fire billowing into the sky after the crash. Some videos also showed one of the pilots parachuting out of the plane.
The cause of the incident is still unknown and under investigation.
Thunder Over Michigan, in a Facebook post, informed attendees about the situation and asked them to calmly leave the airfield and head to their vehicles.
