Six Oscar nominations and one five-star review after another for the film Tár. In it, Cate Blanchett plays the stars of heaven as top conductor Lydia Tár who goes far beyond her book. NPO Radio 4 presenter Jet Berkhout and director Maria Peters tell Op1 about why everyone should see this film.
The film is rightly applauded from all sides, says Jet Berkhout. “It really is a crushing movie. Perhaps the best way to describe it is how I was in the cinema when I saw it.”
“It started slow in a way, and yet so much happened in those ten minutes visually, in terms of acting and in terms of inside information, where as a classical music nerd you immediately realize that every detail has been paid attention to. I actually wanted to press pause in the cinema immediately to process what I saw.”
“They are so thoroughly informed in the world in which it takes place. And at the same time it deals with so many subjects at the same time. It’s so complex and layered. I really just want to see him again right away.”
Cate Blanchett
Director Maria Peters was very impressed with Cate Blanchett, who plays the lead role in the film. “I thought she was phenomenal. I know from experience that conducting is extremely difficult to play. She does that really well. She does it so loosely, like she really is.”
