Since he became head of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, Jesús Vega has had to deal with the most tragic cases in the province. From the hundreds of deaths in the cayucos to the cases of vicarious violence that have marked the island, such as that of Olivia and Anna, aged six and one, allegedly murdered by their father Tomás Gimeno and thrown into the sea. Vega points out that “it was a complicated autopsy due to the conditions in which the body was found, since it spent a lot of time at great depth, and at a very low temperature, but that allowed the body to be preserved quite well and to work under certain conditions, in addition to the case. of Olivia, we had a special characteristic which is that we did not have contact with the relatives as in other cases, “he explained.
Despite extensive experience, Jesús Vega confesses that it is never easy to face a situation with deceased minors. “I could not say if it was the worst or the most unpleasant, we have had many terrible cases such as the German who killed his wife and one of his children in Adeje. What happens is that we forget the cases when they appear others, it depends on the perspective. As forensics we have to have an emotional separation because otherwise it would be impossible to practice our profession “.
Olivia’s body was located on June 11 by the oceanographic vessel Ángeles Alvariño. The body of the minor was found more than a thousand meters deep and inside a sports bag. The autopsy report showed pulmonary edema as the cause of death that would not be compatible with drowning at sea but rather with some type of asphyxia mechanism. At the moment, it is awaiting toxicology reports to determine if the minors were sedated before death.
