Kroon is not just any Jesus. At 26 years old, he is the youngest Jesus ever. And he hopes to pass on that youthfulness. “The last two years have been difficult for young people. I hope to give the young people extra strength with this story.”
‘It’s a story that touches you’
Kroon does not have a religious background, ‘but grandpa and grandma always had a brown Bible lying around’, he says. “I did talk about that with my grandfather.”

But believer or not, that doesn’t really matter for this story, says the protagonist. “It’s a story that does something, that touches you, especially in this time.”
‘I want to be a modern Jesus’
Kroon has been preparing for this role since December. That was intensive, because you don’t just play Jesus. Kroon had several conversations, got to work with all the songs and adapted them to his own feeling and taste. “It seems like the same story every year, and it is somewhere, but you can give it your own interpretation.”

A logical question then is: what is the interpretation of Soy Kroon? “I want to be a modern Jesus,” he says. “Not a carried, calm Jesus, but one with a lot of passion and energy.”
So modern. Speaking of modern, could Jesus also be a woman in the future? Kroon: “Who knows! I would be interested to see if that is possible. The Passion has really been revived by the KRO. So maybe it is.”
Still a little tense
Just a few more hours, and then the youngest Jesus can ever get to work. Then there is probably a little bit of tension. The most exciting? Kroon: “If the drone goes up tonight, flies over all buildings in Doetinchem and I’m somewhere high in the city. I’ll be happy if that goes well.”

No audience
The Passion can be seen tonight from 20.30 on NPO1, but there will be no people on the large square in Doetinchem. That was already decided last summer. Culprit: corona. The fact that the measures have now disappeared does not change that decision.
It makes little difference to Kroon: “There will be 2 million people watching at home. That is a special feeling.”
The municipality of Doetinchem has announced that the square can be reached during the day, but will be closed tonight. “Then you can’t get close,” said a spokesperson.
An appeal has been made within Doetinchem to open the doors, to take a look together. “For example, churches, community centers, schools. Some restaurants have a special dinner package. Hundreds of people will still watch together.”
