‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is expected to be a big winner at the Musical Awards

Jesus Christ Superstar is, as expected, the big winner of the Musical Awards 2024. The acclaimed production won six Awards, including the prize for best major musical and male lead. The experimental Milk was awarded five Awards.

With fourteen nominations Jesus Christ Superstar the big favorite at the Musical Awards Gala, which took place on Wednesday evening in the AFAS Theater in Leusden. Director Ivo van Hove received the award for best director. In addition, it received the prize for best major musical Jesus Christ also awards for the acting (Lucas Hamming as Judas and Edwin Jonker as Pilate) and design (best lighting and sound design).

Surprising is the triumph of Milk from new producer Nanoek, who received five Awards from nine nominations. This experimental musical about motherhood and childlessness received the prize for best small musical (the category for productions with a maximum of fourteen cast members). The performance was also awarded in the categories for emerging talent (Lisa Schol), best music, script and new Dutch musical.

Audience Awards

During the TV broadcast of the Musical Awards Gala, it was also possible to vote for two audience awards. These awards went to the Frisian spectacle performance The trip as best musical and The three piglets as the best family musical.

The modern musical hit was less successful than expected Oh mama! and the new production Boni about a Surinamese freedom fighter: they managed to win ‘only’ two of their eleven and nine nominations respectively. Brigitte Heitzer won an award for her leading role in Oh mama! and the ensemble was awarded; Boni received Awards for best choreography and costumes.
