Earlier this week, my colleague Maxime Truman reported that Jesperi Kotkaniemi had to fly to New York in order to return to Montreal later. The plan was to embark with other players from Finland on a charter flight.
Then, it was reported that KK was back in shape and that he was not only going to be present in Montreal during Camp 2.0: he will be there to regain his place in the lineup following his injury to the spleen.
So far so good.
Then, Arpon Basu – who broken the news of his state of mind in view of the camp yesterday – brought an important update. He claims that Jesperi Kotkaniemi did not fly to New York yesterday.
A little update to this, Kotkaniemi’s agent says he did not take the charter flight that left Finland for New York yesterday. He will instead fly direct to Montreal next week. The story has been updated. He also confirms Kotkaniemi is completely healthy and ready to play.

Why? This is what we are looking for.
You might think that going to New York would not be a good idea since the state has imposed a quarantine period on visitors who arrive. That said, this period only applies to certain American states, where COVID-19 hits hard.
Is it because the plan has changed in terms of its use? Neither, since the agent of KK confirmed that he will take a flight bringing him to Montreal next week. He is still, as far as we know, in top form and at 100% of his capacity.
Remember that Carey Price is also out of the country. So that makes two players (as we know) who are not in the country within two weeks of the start of the training camp, which should take place in 13 days.
At the time of this writing, the mandatory quarantine period in some states and provinces has not been lifted. In theory, they will therefore not be able to start camp in time if nothing changes.
Do they know that the period will be over? Do they have the feeling that the season will not start again? Surely not. If so, KK would not have booked a flight for next week.
It is therefore, for the moment, a mystery.
