On Saturday, the Polish Football Association issued a message that the national team coach Jerzy Brzęczek is infected with the coronavirus.
– His test is positive. It cannot be said that he was asymptomatic, he had a slight fever – President Zbigniew Boniek tells us.
The head of the Polish Football Association informs that coach Brzęczek will undergo three more swab tests: on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. – If it turns out that the results are negative, there will be no obstacles for him to be present at the next training camp. And if health problems do not allow him to do so, a procedure will be implemented to deal with this situation: the representation will be led by an assistant. There is no problem, anyway, I am convinced that the selector will recover by Sunday and will lead the team normally – says Boniek.

The president predicts an optimistic variant, but it is not so obvious that it will work. There is very little time left for the training camp – only a week. The team will play friendly against Finland on October 7, with Italy in the Nations League four days later, and with Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 14 in the Nations League. Even in the Polish league, we have had cases where COVID-19 patients did not recover after 10 days, and that their tests (despite the lack of symptoms) were still positive. Therefore, it is possible that one of the assistants will actually lead the next matches. And it does not matter that neither Tomasz Mazurkiewicz nor Radosław Gilewicz have a UEFA Pro license. The director of the PZPN National Games Department, Łukasz Wachowski, informed on Twitter that the rules of the League of Nations allow the team to be led by a coach who is just taking part in the UEFA Pro course, and even one who is about to sign up for such a course. So it won’t be a problem. If only no one gets sick again.
Zbigniew Boniek informs about the health of other members of the team’s staff. “They’re in quarantine until Tuesday, but no one has any symptoms.” On Monday, everyone will have smear tests done – says the president of the Polish Football Association and points out the approach to the topic:
– Let’s not forget that we have a problem with the coronavirus. Not football, but universal. There are more and more infections in the country, so it’s no wonder that they also affect football. There are several dozen positive people in Pogoń Szczecin, and there are also cases in other clubs. It’s not anyone’s fault, we just don’t know how to protect ourselves – says Boniek.
