Jerusalem Shooting: Two Killed, Eight Wounded in Terrorist Attack

At least two people were killed and eight wounded today in a shooting during rush hour in Jerusalem, the Israeli emergency medical service “Magen David Adom” reported, quoted by Reuters, writes BTA.

“Two terrorists who arrived armed at the scene in a vehicle fired at civilians at a bus stop. They were neutralized by security forces who were nearby,” Israeli police said.

A large number of ambulances and police cars rushed to the scene of the crime, and police said they searched the area to make sure there were no other attackers.

The US ambassador to Jerusalem condemned the shooting.

“A terrible terrorist attack in Jerusalem this morning. We strongly condemn such brutal violence,” said Ambassador Jack Lew.

The shooting in Israel came amid “last-minute” negotiations between Israel and Hamas to extend the truce for another, seventh day, so that negotiations could continue for a Palestinian prisoner exchange in Israel and hostages in Gaza.

The truce allowed many people to receive much-needed humanitarian aid in Gaza following Israel’s bombardment triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.

Amid efforts by mediators to extend the hostage release process under the terms of the Agreed Framework, the current pause will continue, the Israeli military said in a statement released minutes before the temporary truce expired at 7 a.m. this morning.

Hamas, which yesterday released 16 hostages in exchange for 30 Palestinian prisoners, said in a statement that the ceasefire would continue for a seventh day. The terms of the truce remain the same, meaning the fighting will stop and humanitarian aid will be able to reach those in need in Gaza, a spokesman for Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

Qatar was a key mediator between the warring countries, along with Egypt and the United States, noted Reuters.

Ahead of the new deal, Israel and Hamas said they were preparing to resume fighting as talks to free the next batch of hostages stalled.

“A little while ago, Israel gave a list of women and children under the agreement, so the truce continues,” the Israeli prime minister’s office said in a statement just as the ceasefire was due to expire.

Earlier, Hamas said Israel had refused to take back seven more women and children, as well as the bodies of three hostages, in exchange for an extension of the truce. The group did not release the names of those killed, but said yesterday that a family of three Israeli hostages, the youngest of whom was 10-month-old Kfir Bibas, had died during Israeli strikes on the enclave.
