NEW JERSEY – Jersey City police shot and killed a man who allegedly shot a woman during a domestic incident early Thursday, law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the case say.
The gunman allegedly fled the scene of the shooting and then shot at police, who later caught up with him.
Few details were immediately available about the shooting, which occurred at 12:30 am at Communipaw and West Side avenues. Sources say the gunman fled the scene after shooting the woman, who is said to be hospitalized in critical condition.
Police were alerted to the case, tracked him down and chased him, although it is unclear whether he was being chased on foot or in a vehicle. At some point, sources say the suspect pointed the gun at police officers and began shooting.
A police officer returned fire, killing him, the sources said.
No other details about the circumstances were immediately available.
The New Jersey state attorney general’s office is in charge of the investigation, as is the case with all police shootings.
