NEW JERSEY — The city of Jersey City announced Friday the launch of the online application process for summer youth jobs this year.

the dear program Jersey City Summer Youth Works provides young Jersey City residents, ages 15-24, with meaningful employment each summer to help make a positive contribution to their community and obtain a needed job that gives you experience for the future.

“Since we created Youth Works in 2014, we have provided hands-on work experience and enrichment opportunities to more than 3,000 of our most impressionable residents, our youth,” Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement.

“This program is critical to not only empowering a young workforce, but also the thousands of children they help guide and influence in a fun outdoor environment away from computer screens,” Fulop continued.

Johvanny Rodríguez, a Youth Works 2021 lifeguard, said the program offered him the opportunity to build skills.

“Working for Jersey City Recreation placed me at the intersection of civic engagement and communication. This is where I got the ability to build our strong communities by influencing participation,” Rodríguez said.

Hands-on work experience may include helping plan and organize community festivals and events, addressing resident concerns as a member of the Resident Response Center, involving younger children in library system enrichment programs, being a lifeguard at one of the pools managed by the Recreation Department’s Aquatic Program, serving as a camp counselor, or helping keep the community clean through the Department of Public Works, depending on the city.

Online application: To be considered for either program, potential candidates must submit an online application. They can highlight any previous jobs and/or extracurricular activities, as well as which department or agency they are interested in working for over the summer. Please provide your most current information when applying.

one-on-one interview: Selected applicants are interviewed by a Jersey City Youth Works staff member. Applicants will be notified if they have been selected for an interview by email and/or phone call.

The application will be open until March 16.
