Comedian Jerry Seinfeld Declares “Movie Business is Over” Ahead of Directorial Debut
Renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld, widely known for his successful stand-up career and the hit TV show “Seinfeld,” is now venturing into the world of film direction. As Seinfeld prepares for the premiere of his debut feature film, “Unfrosted,” in May, he acknowledged that the movie business no longer holds the grandeur and influence it once had.
Seinfeld: An Admirable Stand-up Career
Jerry Seinfeld, 69, began his stand-up comedy journey in 1976 and later achieved fame through his iconic television show that aired for nine seasons. Despite his extraordinary success in the world of comedy, Seinfeld expressed his awe at the seriousness and dedication of those involved in the movie industry. He revealed in an interview with GQ that many of them remain oblivious to the persistent decline of the movie business, emphasizing how film no longer holds its prestigious position in the social and cultural hierarchy.
Reflecting on the past, Seinfeld noted, “When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we’re walking through a fire hose of water, just trying to see.”
Industry Replacement and Seinfeld’s Confidence
Seinfeld provided his perspective on what might have replaced the movie industry’s universal impact, suggesting a sense of depression, malaise, and confusion prevailing within the entertainment world. Despite this, the seasoned comedian remains unfazed by the industry’s decline, relying on his extensive comedic career and personal brand to thrive.
“I’ve done enough stuff that I have my own thing, which is more valuable than it’s ever been. Stand-up is like you’re a cabinetmaker, and everybody needs a guy who’s good with wood. So, the metaphor is that if you have good craft and craftsmanship, you’re kind of impervious to the whims of the industry,” Seinfeld explained confidently.
Comedy and its Authenticity
Amidst the industry’s diaspora, Jerry Seinfeld emphasized the vitality of comedy in the entertainment world. He believes that comedy remains popular because it cannot be faked, distinguishing it from many other forms of entertainment.
Regarding the enduring allure of comedy, Seinfeld stated, “Audiences are now flocking to stand-up because it’s something you can’t fake. It’s like platform diving. You could say you’re a platform diver, but in two seconds we can see if you are or you aren’t. That’s what people like about stand-up. They can trust it. Everything else is fake.”
