The corridor Jerick McKinnon was officially activated this Saturday from the injured reserve of the Kansas City Chiefsahead of Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.
McKinnon has not played since the Week 15 game against the New England Patriots due to a groin injury. He played in 12 games this season, primarily as a third-down back, with 25 receptions for 192 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown.
He was one of the unsung heroes of the Chiefs’ victory over the Eagles in last year’s Super Bowl. and he underwent surgery in early January so few saw in him the possibility of returning to the team this season.
McKinnon is especially useful in the passing game, where he had 25 receptions and four touchdowns in the 12 games he played this season.
Joe Thuney injured
The Chiefs also placed guard Joe Thuney on injured reserve Saturday and activated tackle Mike Pennel Jr. from the practice squad. Thuney was ruled out Friday for Sunday’s game due to a lingering pectoral injury.
Meanwhile, 49ers promoted defensive linemen Alex Barrett and TY McGill to active practice squad roster.
The team also downgraded defensive lineman Kalia Davis from questionable to out due to an ankle injury. Davis was placed on injured reserve on December 20, but was eligible to be activated for Sunday’s game.
