Jerez competes to host Spanish Space Agency and AI Supervision Agency

Jerez also wants to host the Spanish Space Agency. With its candidacy, formally presented to the Ministry of Territorial Policy, there are four Andalusian cities that aspire to have the headquarters of this body —to which 21 municipalities from all over the country have applied—, or of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of the Artificial Intelligence – fourteen candidacies throughout Spain.

In addition to Jerez, Huelva, Seville and Granada participate in the competition to host one of the two venues. Admission for processing of these candidacies is conditional on the advisory commission verifying that they meet the requirements established for this purpose, as indicated by the Government by means of a note.

The Ministry of Territorial Policy considers that the procedure to determine the headquarters of the new public state agencies “has been a success and has been very well received”, receiving a total of 35 applications for the two agencies from fourteen autonomous communities.

In the case of the Spanish Space Agency, Huelva, Jerez and Seville are competing with 18 other candidates: Cabanillas del Campo (Guadalajara), Cebreros (Ávila), Ciudad Real (Ciudad Real), Elche (Alicante/Alacant), Estella-Lizarra ( Navarra), L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria/Agüimes/San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Las Palmas), León (León), Ourense (Ourense), Palencia (Palencia), Puerto del Rosario (Las Palmas ), Puertollano (Ciudad Real), San Javier (Murcia), Tenerife Island (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Teruel (Teruel), Tres Cantos (Madrid), Zamudio (Vizcaya) and Yebes (Guadalajara).

The Spanish Space Agency, with a component dedicated to National Security, will make it possible to coordinate national space activities and policies, as well as Spain’s participation in international programs in this area. The space sector provides essential services in the field of communications, Earth observation, navigation, security, the fight against climate change or the monitoring of phenomena such as drought or fires.

In the case of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, Jerez and Granada will compete together with A Coruña (A Coruña), Alicante (Alicante/Alacant), Barcelona (Barcelona), Gijón (Asturias), Guadalajara (Guadalajara), Leganés (Madrid), Ourense (Ourense), Palma (Balearic Islands), Salamanca (Salamanca), Tenerife Island (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Segovia (Segovia) and Zaragoza (Zaragoza).

The State Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence will enjoy autonomy, independence, its own assets and administrative powers and will be key to ensuring compliance with European regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI), as indicated by the Government.

The Agency’s main mission is to minimize the risks that AI can bring in fields such as security, privacy and people’s health, as well as other fundamental rights.

Spain will become the first EU country with a State Agency for the supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AI), preceding the entry into force of the future European AI Regulation, which establishes the need for Member States to have an authority supervisor in this matter.

The Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence is part of the Digital Spain 2026 Agenda, in the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, both promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through its Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence , as well as in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
