Jérémie Janot’s Interview: Memories at ASSE, Derbys, Stephane Ruffier, and More

Jérémie Janot was live on Farid Rouas’ Instagram to scan his news, but also of course his memories at ASSE! Extracts.

Derbys

“I only won one, the 100ᵉ (sic). When we go back to Ligue 1 and play against Greater Lyon, that of Coupet and Juninho, they are used to playing these Champions League matches , unlike us. They were often crazy matches, where for a while, we took the upper hand, but they were used to it. We knew how to manage strong times – weak times. Moreover, when the derbies began to rebalance themselves in terms of results, that’s when ASSE regularly tasted the European Cup again. I’m proud to have played these high-intensity matches, but you have to recognize that they were more strong.

Ses inspirations

“Physically, I was more of a Pascal Olmeta than a Gilles Rousset. Besides, Pascal was my agent for several years. I even took an interest in his son who finally signed for Lille (ed. Lisandru Olmeta, trained in Monaco). But also, I was inspired by Fabien Barthez. I put the number 16 for him! After in Sainté, I had the chance to see Gregory Coupet work. I have a lot of admiration for him, because he’s a huge hard worker!”

Stephane Ruffier

“When he arrives, he’s 25 years old… the first year he’s been with us, it’s stratospheric. He’s a great goalkeeper. The end of his Etienne adventure? It’s a shame! In a separation, he you have to take sides with no one, because from two friends, you end up making two enemies. But this separation is really unfortunate for everyone. In France, he had the misfortune to come across Lloris and Mandanda. He only missed the Champions League to get ahead, it’s hard to get goalkeepers who play this competition every year. It could have shaken up the hierarchy.”

His relationship with the ultras

“I lived a permanent kiff, I was not programmed to play at the top. Today with my size, I do not even enter a training center. I was told that I was too small every year. I loved go back to Geoffroy Guichard. It was my stadium, the guys transcend you. If you know how to welcome what the supporters give you, from a good player, you become a very good player! It’s like fire, either warms up, or he burns you. Me, it warmed me up!”

His departure from Valenciennes

“At the end of the season, the club is on sale. They make me an offer, but I put the condition to stay only if Ahmed Kantari continues. He was not extended in league 2 and took over the reserve. J I was right in my boots and so I did not continue the adventure. With the sale, there are no longer all the men who were there when I arrived (Olivier Guegan, Ahmed Kantari etc…). At the end of the season, I was focused on maintaining the team and it was not easy. Nevertheless, my decision was made, I had made the choice not to stay, unless Ahmed (ed. Kantari ) continued the adventure, because I had given him my word to stay with him. In addition, I am annoyed with my shoulder which “dislocates” regularly, including the last time at Geoffroy Guichard in particular. As a result, I have a intervention planned for October in relation to this!”

The rise of 2004

“You should know that we start the season with a sword of Damocles since we are” relegated as a precautionary national because there is a lack of money. At that time, it was Roland Romeyer who put “Sacma” as the main shirt sponsor to stay in league 2. Then, Fred Antonetti had built a homogeneous group with an exceptional state of mind. We finish champion when it was announced as a delicate year. We had fun all season, there was an extraordinary group. Maybe we weren’t the best, but we all had a common goal. I had tigers with me, Hérita Illunga, Vincent Hognon, Stéphane Hernandez… we knew that once we scored, it smelled good (sic).

The difference between a number 1 and a number 2

“There really is a difference between a number 2 and a number 1. A number 1, he can be good or less good, he can be in a state of total grace or have really tough times, but it’s still a number 1 When a number 2 plays, generally at the beginning it always goes well. And then it’s in the long run that we see if he has the makings of a number 1. that’s what happened to me. My performances ended up declining. So I hadn’t yet proven that I could be a number 1. There are plenty of number 2s who make a good interim of 8-10 games where you tell yourself that he could be as good as number 1, but that’s wrong. Be careful, being number 2 is a job, it’s not a shame, you need a good number in a club 2

Mental trainers?

I consider that as a goalkeeper coach, I am the mental trainer of my goalkeepers. I have the boys every day for several hours so I have the advantage of seeing and living with them on a daily basis, unlike a mental trainer. I learned one thing, you will never win a match on a talk, but on a word, you can make it lose. You always have to weigh your words carefully. That’s why a mental trainer, in my opinion, he must always be with the group to really improve his work.”
