Jeonnam case broker received 1.1 billion won in 50,000 won notes for travel luggage

There was court testimony that Seongmo (62, arrested and indicted), a ‘case broker’ in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas, received 1.1 billion won in cash from Tak (44), a coin investment fraud suspect, in exchange for smuggling the investigation.

On the 5th, Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 8 (Chief Judge Kim Yong-shin) conducted the third trial of Seong and his accomplice Jeon (62), who were charged with violating the Attorney-at-Law Act. At the trial on this day, Mr. Tak and his younger brother appeared as witnesses. Mr. Tak and others testified, “On December 9, 2020, 100 million won, and on the 22nd and 27th of the same month, 500 million won each were converted into cash in 50,000 won notes and delivered to (Mr. Seong) in a travel carrier.” At that time, Mr. Seong said he needed money for entertainment expenses and that he needed to hold a golf meeting for high-ranking police officials, so he handed over 1.1 billion won.

In addition, Mr. Tak testified that he raised money by converting the coins he owned into cash and that he put the money in the trunk of Seong’s car at a golf course or restaurant. “On December 9, 2020, Mr. Seong called me that morning, saying that he was eating at a restaurant in Gwangju with high-ranking and mid-level police officers, prosecutors’ investigators, and a secretary of a Jeollanam-do National Assembly member, and deposited 100 million won in cash into his vehicle parked next to the restaurant. “He instructed.” Accordingly, Mr. Tak testified, “I rushed to Gwangju by air from Jeju Island, where I was on a business trip that day, and put 100 million won in cash into the trunk of Mr. Seong’s Genesis car, which was parked near the restaurant.” Mr. Tak continued, “Mr. Seong said, ‘It costs 1 billion won to manage high-ranking positions in the investigative agency, secure a golf membership, and hire a lawyer.’ After that, he provided 1 billion won by putting 500 million won each in the trunk of the car.”

Mr. Seong is accused of receiving 1.742 billion won in bribes from Mr. Tak and others on 13 occasions over a period of about a year from August 2020 in the name of suppressing the investigation or providing convenience. Prosecutors are expanding their investigation into political and political connections suspected of being connected to Seong. The decision hearing to seek the first trial sentence for Seong is scheduled to be held on the 11th of next month.
