Aspiring American star Jenson Brooksby was “proud” of himself after beating former world number 5 Kevin Anderson at the Citi Open in Washington. Brooksby, who received a wild card for Washington, is making his debut at the tournament.
Brooksby played his very first match in Washington on Monday when he defeated Anderson 7-6 (4), 6-3. Brooksby will next play against fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe. “I was really proud of myself to get it back and several [Punkte] could win in a row to get the first set, “Brooksby said on the ATP website.
“I kept my foot on the accelerator, I started to come back better, I got the break. I’m happy to finish it in straight (sets).”
Brooksby avenges defeat in Newport finals
Two weeks ago Brooksby reached his first ATP final in Newport before losing to Anderson.
“I was definitely happy with the way I finished the first set. Of course, two weeks ago in Newport I had a lot of break opportunities and also in the tie-break,” said Brooksby. “I did not understand it.
That was definitely disappointing. “Anderson could not implement the first breakpoint of the match in the sixth game, but also saved a breakpoint in the ninth game. Anderson then had the chance to break the first set in the 12th game.
Game to win, but Brooksby saved a set point to force a tiebreaker. After Anderson could not implement a set point in the 12th game, Anderson started the tiebreak positively after taking an early 4-1 lead.
But Anderson’s game stalled on the next couple of points as Brooksby won six points in a row to steal Anderson’s first set. Brooksby had the first breakpoint of the second set in game six, but Anderson saved to level the set at three games apiece.
