Jennifer Hermoso’s Return to Spanish National Team After Controversial Kiss: Latest News and Updates

Jennifer Hermoso has been included in the Spanish selection for the first time since the controversial kiss of then federation president Luis Rubiales. The Spain women’s team will play Nations League matches against Italy and Switzerland at the end of October.

The 33-year-old Hermoso has not played for the national selection since the World Cup last summer. The player was kissed on the lips by Rubiales on August 20 after the World Cup final against England. The association chairman reluctantly resigned after the commotion.

National coach Montse Tomé, the successor to the dismissed Jorge Vilda, did not call Hermoso for the matches against Sweden and Switzerland in September. Spain won these matches 2-3 and 5-0 respectively.

Tomé said at the time that she had left Hermoso out of the team to protect her. “We stand by Jenni and all the players in everything. This is the best way to protect her.”

Hermoso did not understand that explanation at the time. “It has been said that the environment within the union would be safe enough for my colleagues. But at the same press conference it is reported that I have not been called to protect myself. We have been asking for protection from the union for weeks, even months. But this protection never came.”

Tomé had called up a large part of the World Cup squad during the previous international match, but many players went on strike because they saw too few reforms within the Spanish association. After days of consultation and fear of sanctions, they finally reached an agreement with the union.
